There are many reasons why we love animals but perhaps one of the most endearing qualities is their sense of loyalty. They will go to almost any length to protect their family, to show unconditional love and to stay by their side. That fact was clearly demonstrated by this sweet orange and white cat, Toby.
Toby was given away by his North Carolina family because they no longer wanted him. As you can imagine, he missed them and wanted to be with them again. He then set off on a trek of 12 miles, all the way back to his original home. When he got there, he faced something that nobody could have foreseen.
His former family took Toby, who had just walked 12 miles, to the vet. They weren’t there to make sure he was okay, they wanted to have him euthanized. When the staff asked why, they told them that they “no longer wanted him.”
The SPCA of wake County received a call from the shelter and they went to pick up Toby. When they heard the story, they rushed over to help find a new home. His story was made public and it went viral.
The shelter posted the following on Facebook: “Toby is safe here at the SPCA Pet Adoption Center waiting to find his forever home. He would prefer to be the only cat in his home. We hope his story inspired you to take a stand for animals in need.”
The Wake County SPCA had a Dog Walk and Woofstock in 2018 and they made Toby the star. They used his viral story to promote the walk and came up with this slogan: “If he is willing to walk 12 miles to save his life, will you walk ONE to save thousands of animals like Toby?”
As you can imagine, Toby didn’t stay in the shelter very long. He found a forever home and is still being given all the love he deserves.
